Things to do in Homer, Alaska

HALIBUT AND SALMON FISHING:

Homer offers the best halibut and salmon fishing in the world! There are plenty of qualified charter operators to choose from or we’ll be glad to help you find one. Charters take you out deep to fish for halibut or they troll closer to shore for salmon. King, red or silver salmon are fun to catch from the “Fishin’ Hole” on the Homer Spit and you only need a fishing license and fishing gear that can be rented.

KAYAKING:

Want to experience the beauty of Kachemak Bay? Go kayaking! Several companies can take you across the bay for a full or half day of paddling with the otters and whales. The tranquility of the coves will charm you. Never been kayaking before? No problem—these companies offer quick lessons and full service so you can be on your way (with or without a guide).

HIKING:

There are many hiking trails on the Homer side of Kachemak Bay that are easily accessible and offer a nice day of adventure and beauty. Across the bay is Kachemak Bay State Park with its variety of trails. These vary in length and difficulty but they all take you into the wilderness of beauty. To get to the State Park trails, you need to hire any water taxi which is a really fun ride.

SHOPPING / DINING:

Homer has lots of art galleries as well as unique shops that will keep you occupied while the guys are out fishing. We know of some cute little places for lunch and then we have nationally acclaimed restaurants that will give you the finest dinner you’ll have in Alaska. (The problem is there’s more than one of these restaurants so you guests staying only one night will have to make a tough choice between them!)

SIGHTSEEING:

I’m sure by now you’ve figured out that Homer is a picturesque place. The mountains of Kachemak Bay contrast with the blue water to make a picture your digital camera can never duplicate as well as the picture in your memory. There are flightseeing tours available but you can also take a simple drive out of town.

MUSEUMS:

Pioneer Inn is located beside the world famous Pratt Museum. Admission is very inexpensive and you’ll find yourself easily spending at least an hour looking over the displays on local natural history, native culture and art, marine ecology and the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Then there’s our new Islands and Oceans Visitor Center where you can learn about Alaska’s Maritime Wildlife Refuges. The exhibits are all modern and very well done.

BEAR VIEWING:

If you want an amazing experience go see the bears! It's awesome---GUARANTEED! We will be glad to help you choose a company that can take you across Cook Inlet. Every one of our guests that take this trip come back with a grin on their face that lingers for days. Not one person has ever complained that they didn't
get their money's worth of bears and all say it's the best part of their entire trip.
